The access mechanism to control plugging in/out using an radio tag (RFID), as well as metering and communications technology to facilitate public use of the charger by collecting metering data. Public chargers also provide operating status information on request by a chargerpoint control system.

Available on single/three-phase AC models, public chargers are robust and are built to operate in all weather conditions and withstand tampering and vandalism. They are installed in public locations and require civil works to install the supporting electrical switching equipment and ground anchor.

Depending on the electric vehicle, three-phase public chargers are able of charging a flat battery to 80% capacity in 2-3 hours.
